I haven't posted a shot from the beach in a long time so i thought this would be a great departure from my normal faire.

Here's how i decide what photo to post next and to also keep in touch with the ever growing body of unpublished photos that i have taken. What I like to do is make a folder on my desktop, then put all of my finished photos into it, let's just call it the hopper, or as Erin Babnik calls it the marination folder. Then I set my computer to use that folder for the slideshow function and then set the screensaver to activate when I move the cursor into the lower right corner. Now all I have to do is move the mouse to the lower corner to see my ready to publish photos or ready to be reedited in some cases, Haha.

I'm having better luck posting lately, so here's one from the archives. Taken during a brilliant sunset in August 2016.

I originally had planned to do a long exposure of this spot but after reviewing the results decided to capture the action with a faster shutter speed.

I'm so happy to announce that I have been ask to return as a guest speaker at the Nightscape Photography Conference in Kanab, Utah on May 20th-23rd 2020.

Update 20/5/2016

Im going to specialise in taking bad photos of orange council trucks from here on!!! lol!

Thank you for all your comments and faves!

Pat.

Ive had these photos up for a year and a half and in spite of all the great advice I prefer the other one. Its to do with the moodiness of it as it looks far more spooky than this one. I think you would have to walk down that road in the half light as I did. There is a grey/blue hue off everything. It shoots up from the road to meet you and the a ghostly light reflects

of the huge boughs, which were wet at the time, and seemed to be reaching out to grab you.I was a bit nervous I dont mind admitting. Then of course the "orange" council truck appeared. I was kind of glad!

With regard to Faves and Views they are practically neck and neck.So that helps a lot!!!!!

Pat.

Taken Friday morning with my 'new' phone, then processed in Topaz Studio with a texture of my own. The weather went downhill shortly after this, it poured down for the rest of the the day. It doesn't seem like we'll get a proper summer this year, here in the UK. Marnie and I visit this place nearly every day if I'm short of time, as it's so close to home. She gets what she needs, familiarity and a space to roam. I get a nice view down the stream with flowers, beautiful trees and the sight and sound of trickling water.

You know I usually like to put music to my images, so here's something beautiful you may not have heard or seen before.

And now for something completely different .....

My apologies to the writers of "Good Golly Miss Molly," for ever so slightly tinkering with the lyrics, in the name of good old Flickr fun. I simply changed the word "ball" for "Tulip." See and hear how the classic song should be sung by clicking on the following link, which will take you to a fun film version.

First, though, a viewing tip. Please right click on the link, and select "open link in new tab." That way you can have the music playing in the background while viewing this series of shots at the same time. You can also switch to the video at anytime in that other window to feast on Little Richard's astonishing performance.

I, personally, found it best to scroll down each picture in time with the song. One final thing, there are twenty-eight seconds of dialogue from the film scene before The King, Little Richard, struts his stuff. It took some time to put all this together but I had fun. Hope you guys do too. So here we go, here's that link ~~~

#MacroMonday

#OnACoin

Diameter of the coin: 2,7 cm / 1,06 inches

Oh dear, oh dear... What a journey. Actually I wanted to skip, because I really had no idea what to put on a coin that would even remotely make sense. I knew which coin I wanted to use, yes, but... However, as I rummaged through my drawers in search of something small that would go well with my coin of choice, I stumbled upon a few larger pins. Immediately one of those tourist or underground station city maps that depict your current location ("You are here") came to my mind. Since the coin shows a kind of map of Europe and Africa (and also the planets of our solar system), my original idea was to put the pin approximately where Berlin/Germany would be on that "map". But how should I fixate a metal pin on a metal coin? Glue? Didn't work. Modeling clay? But how should I hide the modeling clay? And how should I position the pin so that it wouldn't cover most of the "map"? By the time I had figured out how to do it (I "glued" the pin onto the coin's blue polymer ring with a small piece of blue modeling clay, at an angle that would let you see the map, too, while hiding the modeling clay), it was evening, and I didn't feel like shooting any more. There was a movie I wanted to watch on TV, and I was fed up with coins and pins in general ;-) I decided to continue the next day.

No sooner said than done. And easier said than done, too. On Monday, I placed the coin and pin on a small glass table and my tablet under the glass table. I opened Google Maps and chose a satellite view of North and South America (the Panama Canal region, simply because it looked nice as background). Numerous focus stacking / Helicon focus attempts followed. When I checked the time I realised that it already was four o'clock in the afternoon and I still had to write my description and tags. So I quickly had to choose one of the photos, and process it. Which is what you see here. Sigh.

Now for the coin itself: It is a 5 Euro collector's coin ("Blauer Planet Erde" - "Blue Planet Earth"), and it also is legal tender (in Germany only, however), officially issued by the Deutsche Bundesbank / the Federal Government (link: www.bundesbank.de/en/tasks/cash-management/euro-coins/col...). Not that I would like to use it as means of payment, since I have hopes that it will make me rich one day (hopeless now that I have scratched its valuable surface with a pin) ;-)

A Happy Macro Monday, Everyone, stay safe and well!

……It’s a good job they put the knocker up high for me!!! Well made me smile at least - an old shot from the New Forest where forest horses are free to roam, this house I’m guessing puts a bucket of water out for them - and if they are lucky a pile of Rose Fertiliser is left as payment😊…….. Hope the week is going well, stay locked down and cosy to stay safe and to keep EVERYONE else safe too! A VERY BIG THANK YOU to ALL the key workers who are carrying on to benefit the rest of us - we applaud you all. Alan;-)👏👏👏👏👏

I don't think I'll ever feel that business is complete at any location. Not even at the so often photographed lighthouse at Godrevy, eleven miles down the road that appears in a disproportionate percentage of my posts as well as the avatar I use here and elsewhere. I'll never capture the perfect shot- and if somehow that happened, I suspect some form of disillusionment would follow - but at the same time there are pictures that make us happy as we develop them into a pleasing final result. Especially so when we return to a place for the second time to find the star of the show has actually bothered to put in an appearance. As Lee said to a fellow tog on the beach here "Well I've been to Vestrahorn twice, but this is the first time I've seen it." The young English photographer apparently furrowed his brow questioningly, waiting for a further explanation. "When we came here in 2019, the entire mountain range was covered in a blanket of cloud that went all the way down to ground level," Lee continued. "We stayed here for about three hours, hoping things might change, but they only got worse, and we needed to move on."

Lee's retold tale took us back to what was without question the most disappointing episode of that whistle stop tour three years earlier, the only other visit either of us had made to Iceland when we'd circled the entire country in a bright yellow VW campervan named Brian. The day beforehand we'd driven from the far north for hours and hours through increasingly bad weather and disappearing visibility. The mysterious southeast corner between Egilsstadir and Djupivogur remained almost entirely a mystery, the occasional hint of untouched fjord looming silently out of the mist as we made our way south. We arrived at Eystrahorn, just forty minutes away to spend the small hours hoping for a change in the weather, but the morning only delivered more of the same. And when you're attempting to encircle a nation of this size in six days where road conditions and speed limits are designed to keep progress at the steadiest of paces, you can only give a location so much time before you have to move on. By the time we arrived at Vestrahorn and paid the entrance fee to get down to the celebrated viewpoint we'd dreamed of seeing for so long, its total absence from the scene was received in the manner of a firm blow being delivered to the solar plexus. We weren't happy. Ironically, I did eventually turn the camera around to take what was later received on Flickr as one of the most successful images from the trip in "The Life of Brian." I've shamelessly added a link to the bottom of this story as a plug. Later, we moved on to Hofn and then to Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon and Diamond Beach, which happily delivered happier results.

So if nothing else happened on this return to the scene, what we wanted to do was actually see Vestrahorn in all of its magnificence. Whether we'd get any worthwhile images under such a bland sky was a question in point, but as we were staying nearby for four nights, we'd get at least a couple of stabs at laying the spectre of that July morning 2019 to rest. The sense of anticipation in the car as we made our way along the sometimes bumpy track from the main road was infinitely palpable. Every corner turned found us expecting to see the iconic view at last, but what we hadn't realised was that you can only really see Vestrahorn once you head out over the causeway towards the dunes. If we'd had a glimpse on the previous expedition we'd have known that. "Where is it?" I screeched excitedly as I drove slightly more urgently than I should have done. "Have they moved it since last time, just to annoy us?"

Of course, it was there. Why after all would the custodians remove it when they do such a roaring trade charging entrants 900kr a head for the pleasure of seeing the place. We can all rant about being charged to stare at a mountain range, but I find that if you've done your research and know the only way you're going to get a good view is to reconcile yourself to the fact you'll be parting with cash to do so, it at least makes things easier. In fact, we happily parted with the fee on two consecutive days to be here, and I've no doubt we'd have gone again given the time to do so. After all, what a place it is when you finally get to see the mountain range that's featured in countless images for yourself. If there were architecture prizes for natural landscapes, this one would definitely be on a shortlist for a major prize. And when you do arrive, you're immediately faced with so many opportunities. You can shoot reflections over a tidal lagoon, or you can choose a golden grassed dune to perch upon or behind as you try to eliminate the billion footprints on the volcanic black sand. You can zoom in to only include one part of the range, but it would be rude not to take the wide angle lens and consign the entire majesty of it to your SD card. And then you can head down to the water and shoot the incoming tide as big sweeps of white water leave streaks across the shoreline. I could happily spend days here, learning the location and capturing it in every imaginable mood. Even the fact that every tog in southeast Iceland will be competing for elbow room here with you as the light intensifies seems tolerable to me. As I stood in this spot, opening the shutter again and again, earning a welly boot full of seawater for my efforts, I was surrounded by a collection of clackers from across the globe, each seemingly lost in their own happy worlds. Some would smile in the knowledge that they were spending hard earned precious time in one of the world's great photography meccas, while others stood behind their tripods with fixed expressions, knowing this might be their only chance to return from this magical land with an image worthy of their wall or their online gallery.

In this image, which was the sixteenth edition of the original, I found myself sacrificing the immediate foreground drama continued by that big sweep of seawater, by cropping the bottom of the shot to bring the viewer closer into the scene. It definitely falls into the "best viewed large" category, so I hope you've switched the computer on to take a closer look. The almost featureless sky was rescued by a yellow sunset glow to the west, while a couple of tufts nestled pleasingly atop the highest peaks on Vestrahorn. And that foreground wash of water towards me made the shot an easy selection from the many I took of this wide angle view. I've got to confess I'm pretty pleased with the result, and the ghost of 2019 has been happily banished from the back catalogue of despondency. Vestrahorn had made its peace and repaid us for that dismal afternoon three years ago. Happy? Well, yes, I rather think I am this time.

………This Elephant Hawk Moth caterpillar was creeping by the back door - I guess from the Fuchsias nearby, I moved it on to the lawn for a photo shoot and it wouldn’t shift out of defence mode to its full length circa 8CM! They bunch up the front end to enlarge it and look 'head' like then they use their markings to imitate eyes to intimidate predators (and photographers!). Press 'Z' for a much closer look, I put him in a safe leafy place so he can carry on the life cycle to emerge as a beautiful moth next May/June. Needed focus stacking really - DoF too shallow for this monster - for scale that's a Silver Birch leaf. Alan:-)…….

Old time followers may remember this gothic window - I first built it in November 2017. Got even explored two times, back in the days when legographeres weren't banned from court. If you try to recreate this: There's glass behind, and don't be too accurate with the frame, the cheese slopes do what they always do: bulge your belly (or window in this case)

The picture was a tricky one, as I've tried to have light behind the window and on the minifigures. I've settled for light in the window, as I think you'll see close-up shots of the bard all over the kingdom.

Oh, and that yellow thingy is supposed to be a crown.

Forgot to put a link to the original in the 1st comment, so the link is here: Gothic Window

Toy Project Day 2354

The Parable of the Sheep and Goats is found in Matthew 25:31-46.

In this parable, Jesus uses the example of a shepherd who separates his sheep from his goats in order to help his followers understand what judgement will be like.

Jesus explains that people will be separated into two groups:

Those who have lived good lives and believed in God will be put on one side and have a place in Heaven

And

Those who have rejected the belief in God and sinned in their lives will be placed on the other side and will go to Hell

-- So much for a kindly God that loves all! The bible is full of contradictions.

The books that make up the Bible were written by various people over a period of more than 1,000 years, between 1200 B.C.E. and the first century C.E. The Bible contains a variety of literary genres, including poetry, history, songs, stories, letters and prophetic writings.

If you are interested here is a link to a web site explaining who and when things got into the bible - or were left out or removed.

Two raw Pano-Sabotage pieces taken within a split second of each other, placed in temporal sequence moving left to right, creating a diptych.

First, the bus came by and I shot that. As I was shutting down the camera, I saw the cyclist coming up fast on the 'heels" of the bus, so I quickly put the camera back on Pano and got her passing by just in the nick.

The cyclist seems to harken back to Italian "Futurism" and their capture of movement as a sequence of steps. Giacomo Balla's famous trotting dog on a swaying leash is an example.

Methinks I need to stop now!! I have way too many choices. My favorites are the spoon (community), the stamp series, the power button and this one. I’ll be dithering this afternoon for sure. And parenthetically you can tell a lot about a person from their word choices- right?

Will put the link to the album somewhere here.

****Btb, I am having a devil of a time with Flickr - for the last few days I’m been getting mini-freezes. Makes it hard to comment and to add pictures.. SIGH. And, yes, I have rebooted my phone and Flickr. I’m surprised I can add this on to the description.

To show up panoramas Flickr isn't the best platform. Now I've found a way to show it to you interactive!!!

Please use the Link below and you can navigate in this panorama as if you were standing on the cameras place.

Put your mousepointer into the picture and klick the left button. You only have to move the pointer up....down...left....right....thats it.

If it doesnt work, you may need Java, Flashplayer or something else - perhaps a Quicktime plugin...I don't know...for me it works ;-)

View me in Original Size

This is a 8 picture-panorama in HDR (15,6 Mega Pixel), this means all in all I've made 24 pics for that pano. It contains a rotation about 180°.

You see the (especially in the Netherlands) famous Zugspitz-Arena around Ehrwald.

The daytime is late, thus the sun illuminates mountain Zugspitze on the left side. Right above the Zugspitze you can see the moon.

Have fun, I'll be back on Friday!

The cards fell correctly into place this particular Saturday afternoon. New power from Toronto had arrived in Kitchener the night before, and the chances of an all GP9 consist were high. The crew selected these 3 units, put them together, and ran to Stratford with 3 hoppers in tow. I rendezvoused with the train and friends at Stratford, and gave chase after they finished their work there. A trio of GP9s was already fantastic, but here just north of Thorndale the climax of the chase occurred when the skies opened up displaying excellent storm light. Just a mere 100 feet behind us was a pop up downpour that was so close we could feel the mist from it on our backs, but we escaped getting wet luckily. Good power, great light when it counted, and good company from great friends made this one of the best chases so far over my 10 years of rail photography.

This is the last of three murals painted by local artist and businessman by Kevin Hansen...

I have added the frame here in my post-processing.

Also, since I don't know if the artist has given it a title, I have titled it temporarily here. I will change it if and when I hear otherwise.

Kevin is a cobbler who owns and operates Molly's Cobbler Shop, which is just 10 blocks from our home.

He is also an accomplished artist, regularly producing original artwork, often hanging them outside on one of his shop walls. He often features themes of our city and state. I love his style and effective use of colors!

As I was passing his shop today, I parked, got out, and captured each of the three Christmas murals hanging on his outside wall. This is one of those paintings. I may put all three of them in a collage and post them.

Here are two links if you want to see more of Kevin's artistry. The first link is to his shop's website, and the second features more of his art projects :)

One of you will betray me

It is time for the lamb to die

Sometimes a greater sacrifice is needed

Which is bigger than you or I

Because this love will split the heavens

There will be no hiding from any lies

From here you will have your choices

But don’t ever forget how much I tried

*****

So this is the first work for Easter in a Mini-Series that I have put together and for this one I was imagining Christ at the Last Supper with his disciples in my mind. I was thinking about the fact that he knew one of his friends was going to betray him, yet he still forgave him.

The Easter story is still relevant for today, as we consider the innocence of the lambs in our fields, whose life is sometimes so brief.

No matter how long or short our lives are on this earth, we can make a difference. Even if we are just a babe in arms when we have to leave, we make a difference to those around us, we are never forgotten.

But can we forgive our betrayers? Could we sit down and have a Last Supper with them? Christ knew that evil can drive a person to do things he would otherwise not. But we are not Christ, we are merely human, but perhaps we can strive to make this world a better place for our lambs to grow up in.

When evil grows tired of waging war, perhaps we might remember this, that the innocent deserve a chance to live.

This shot was from a series of images I took last year on the Sussex Downs in the UK, near where I live. I had another look at these images in my archive…and this work came to my mind for Easter. So I will leave this here for you to reflect upon, perhaps listening to Peter Gabriel’s music track “The Feeling Begins” from his remarkable album, “The Temptation of Christ”, see the link below.

Over the next three days, I will add the others in the series for this Easter. Meanwhile, blessings to you all, and my love as always to my followers and friends.

UPDATE 18th April, 2025....EXPLORED..

Hal the Algorithm has been busy again, and it looks as though he likes my 'sheep shots'. [And desks !!] There is a very dark humour in that which I find really rather delicious. But thank you to everyone who has taken the time to fave, view and comment on this image, even more if you have read my prose to go with it. Much appreciated. Meanwhile, I will be loading another in the Easter Series up tonight for Saturday. That strange in-between time before the joy of Easter Day.

After Easter Day, I will be catching up with you all, so until then, all my love for Easter to you all. Shell x

I wanted to recommend the film Perfect Days to everyone. Though it's another film directed by Wim Wenders, it is set in Tokyo and features an all Japanese cast, most notably Koji Yakusho as the lead. There is quite a bit of the visual concept of komorebi or “sunlight leaking through trees" as well as appreciating the sights and sounds and random bits of nature and people in each day. Each morning, Yakusho hears the street sweeper, sees the morning light (unless it's raining) and tends to his Japanese maple plants. The film eases you into his modest peaceful routine but there is some conflict along the way and you get to see the full range of human emotion.

Anyway, a coworker has been giving me an amaryllis bulb each year. I don't have to tend to it like my other plants (of which you can see in the shadows), but I do have to put it up high as it is toxic to cats. So, it sits on the highest bookshelf watching us lift our heads to admire how it grows. These bulbs needed to be cut today and I thought it would make not just a good photograph but a document of my life in terms of every day moments I experience.

I just want to mention again that I feel this film is an absolute masterpiece and, if I had been able to see it last year when it initially came out (It hit theaters here on Friday at The Music Box in Chicago), I would have definitely included it in my favorite films of 2023. Still, it's nice to have a post all just for this film.

The thing that puts me into the holiday spirit isn't Christmas music, or snow, or even buying gifts. No, it's going to see Pere Marquette 1225 every December as it pulls the Polar Express! Here's the 1941-built Berkshire doing just that as it thumps out of Owosso passing the former Robbins Furniture Warehouse.

If you are interested in specific locomotives, trains, or freighters, please contact me. I have been photographing trains and ships for over 15 years and have accumulated an extensive library!

Eight days from the impending take over from BNSF, Montana Rail Link and its fantastic employees, surprised the Vice President of the Railroad with one last trip around the railroad to celebrate his retirement for his long lasting career on the MRL.

Moving right along the 4th Sub is the MRL 4406 sandwiching the beautiful set of business cars with the MRL 4408 bringing up the rear, the OCS is seen here splitting the Northern Pacific searchlights on the east end of siding in Frenchtown, MT. The train would continue its trip up to Superior, MT where the crew would change ends and back to Missoula later in the day, giving my father and I the opportunity to chase all day and have a variety of shots. The sun tried to poke out here but alas, mostly cloudy for the whole day.

Fast Forward almost 2 years, the vintage Northern Pacific signals have been replaced, not long after this shot was taken. The MRL image has been put in BNSF’s rear view, as our favorite regional railroad is now apart of the Orange conglomerate. This was a chase I’ll remember, as I got to experience the beauty that surrounds the MRL and doing it all with my dad. Taken: 12-23-23

Today at 3:15 I received a text from my friend Bill, Hey, He says, there will be high clouds with a decent possibility of good color at sunset, wanna meet up at Corona Del Mar?

Last time Bill ask if I wanted to meet there I had to opt out because of the flu and that day he walked away with one of the most amazing shots I've ever seen. No way I'm passing on a second invite!!

CDM is 1hr. and 5 mins. from my home and sunset is at 4:40, that would give me 10mins to get ready and head out the door and 10 mins to find parking and get down to the beach. So off I went, racing down the 15 freeway like Mario Andretti. I was passing cars like they were standing still and made up an extra 5 mins. during the "INDY 500".

1 hour later I'm sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on Pacific Coast Highway 10 minutes away from the beach and to my dismay Newport Beach was having the annual Christmas Walk along PCH. The place was packed with people walking around with their Christmas hats and Santa suits and oversized candy canes, and I'm sitting there watching, pissed off angry and grumbling. I felt like a bipolar version of the The Grinch and Scrooge. "BAH HUMBUG" I exclaimed, so much for the 10 min window to get down to the beach. I finally hit Hazel st. which puts you right on the ramp leading down to the beach and just my good fortune a car was just pulling out leaving a spot vacant, SWEET!!!! The photo gods were shining down on me. I looked over at the ocean and could see the sun just touching the horizon and started the 5 minute mad dash down the ramp leading onto the beach. By the time I rounded the corner on the bottom of the ramp leading to the beach the sun was just disappearing below the sea. I'm running past people kicking up sand the whole way and I pass by a dad telling his kid, "there goes the sun little buddy". Blast!!!! I was supposed to get over the rocks to the south and meet Bill at the cave facing towards the Arch at Cliff Rock, Well that wasn't going to happen!!! All I could do is setup and shoot what I can get before it was too late and here is the result.

Damn Foiled again!!!!!

While shooting, I ran into fellow photographer Mike Teague who was snapping away, we exchanged pleasantries and then struck up a conversation about drone photography and shooting around Lone Pine. I showed him some of my work and we exchanged contact info, Cool, another local photographer to shoot around with, Turns out he's a really cool guy and he's on Instagram. Here's a link to his stream there.

Today’s post is inspired by the very beautiful work of my dear friend Charlotte. Charlotte excels in many different genres of photography and digital art and if you don’t already follow her I encourage you to check out her photostream.

This particular technique, called the Adamski effect after Israeli photographer Joshua Adamski, is one that I learnt from Charlotte. If you’d like to check out some of her “Adamski effect” images you can do so by clicking here.

The Adamski effect involves duplicating your photo (in Photoshop or similar editing program), and then on the top layer selecting just your main subject so that it remains in sharper focus, then on the lower background layer using some type of motion or path blur to create a beautiful blurry, dreamy background.

My effort uses a photo of some surfers that I took on a recent trip down the Great Ocean Road, on Logan’s Beach in Warrnambool, original photo linked in the first comment.

I'm also making this my post for the Definitely Dreaming week 15 theme of "Mood" because I think this technique evokes a very dreamy mood, and being on a beach always puts me in a good mood.

Hello everybody! I'm am very proud to announce that (with the help of the wonderful Lego Creationist) I have made an intro for the famous Flicker Fighters!

Also, you may have noticed I didn't add my superhero persona, Flux to the video. While that would've been a cool way to add him to their ranks, it seemed too much like I was shoehorning him in. Especially since this is the original team and not the extended one.

BUT, I still made a video so that Flux can still be a part of it, enjoy: (Note I put my new intro at the beginning, that's not actually part of it.)

Anyway, this is part of the reason I've been active, but it was mainly Bible School. I should be uploading more edits, blah, blah, blah. :P You've heard this all before. I'm starting to feel like a broken record...

The Chedworth Roman Villa is a Roman villa located at Chedworth, Gloucestershire, England. It is one of the largest Roman villas in Britain. The villa was built in phases from the early 2nd century to the 4th century, with the 4th century construction transforming the building into an elite dwelling arranged around three sides of a courtyard. The 4th century building included a heated and furnished west wing containing a dining-room (triclinium) with a fine mosaic floor, as well as two separate bathing suites – one for damp-heat and one for dry-heat. The villa was discovered in 1864, and it was excavated and put on display soon afterwards. It was acquired in 1924 by the National Trust who have conducted a long-term conservation programme, with new on-site facilities and cover-buildings. It is debatable among historians whether Chedworth was indeed a farm or in fact a religious hostel, there is evidence to support both of these arguments, however most historians believe that Chedworth was a farm, owned by a very wealthy Roman. The villa stands in a sheltered, but shady, position overlooking the River Coln in the Cotswold Hills in Gloucestershire. It was located just off the Roman road known as the Fosse Way, and 8 miles (13 km) north of the important town of Corinium Dobunnorum (Cirencester) It was one of about fifty villas in the Cotswolds, and one of nine in just a 5 mile radius. The villa was located next to a natural spring in the north west corner of the complex, which was the villa's main source of water, and which was where the inhabitants built an apsidal shrine to the water-nymphs. The villa was founded about 120 AD, and began as three separate and modest groups of buildings. During this earliest phase the villa consisted of separate buildings to the west and south with a detached bath house to the north. In the early 3rd century, the west and south wings were rebuilt following a fire, and the north bath-suite was enlarged with extra rooms added to its eastern side. In the early 4th century, the villa was transformed into an elite dwelling enclosing the courtyard. The existing wings were linked by a covered portico, and an inner garden and outer courtyard were created. The dining-room received its mosaics and the northern half of the west wing was converted to become a second set of baths. Shortly afterwards the baths in the north wing were rebuilt and changed to dry-heat (laconicum) baths, which meant that the villa had both damp-heat and dry-heat bathing suites. The floors of at least eleven rooms were decorated with fine mosaics. In the late 4th century (Phase IV) the north wing was extended with the addition of a new dining-room. The villa was probably destroyed in the 5th century. The spring-fed pool in the northwest corner of the villa complex was the location of the apsidal shrine to the water-nymphs (nymphaeum). The curved rear wall is 2 metres high and is the original Roman masonry. A Christian chi-rho monogram was discovered scratched on the rim of the pool.

"From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia"!

The photo that is already up here (same one) was rendered through Photoshop 6.0, using an old desktop. I decided to experiment and redo this on Lightroom and then put the finishing touches on Photoshop Express. I will link the original photo in the comments section below, so you can see the difference.

Lightroom offers me the chance to work with color, density, hue, and tint, better than the old Photoshop program ever did.

This photo was shot on Kodak Ektachrome Tungsten, ASA 160. I didn't use a filter of any kind. I shot it with a Minolta SLR, one of the cameras in our display case. The slide (one of many) was scanned at Samy's Camera in Pasadena two years ago.

At the time I shot this photo, fast film stocks were not available for commercial use, or for consumer grade cameras. Black and white film, such as Tri-X, was fast, ASA 400, but I wanted to shoot color. Ektachrome daylight slide film was ASA 64, and Kodacolor II was only about ASA 80. The Ektachrome Tungsten was the "fastest" of any of the color film stocks we sold.

In any case, in this day and age of digital still cameras and smartphone cameras with varying white balance settings, including auto white balance, this was quite an accomplishment. I was shooting film under lighting conditions that were not friendly to either daylight color film or tungsten color film. Our brain "corrects" how we see color and light, so being in a place like this store looks "normal" to the human eye But the florescent lighting gives off a kind of cyan cast. It's used because it is a money and energy saver, and the lights do not give off much heat.

Also, in 1973, the average person who took photos indoors used a flash, rendering everything to look like... well, you know what such photos look like, just your average everyday snapshot. My thinking was more along the lines of, "What would this look like in a movie if it were shot by using only the florescent lights?" I would get a real answer, but it took a few years for that to happen. (I was 19 years old when I was doing this stuff.)

I was taking a risk by using the display camera for such purposes, but I am glad I did it. This store no longer exists. Without realizing it, I had created a time capsule of a place and at a time that are both long gone. I have no regrets in having done this, none whatsoever.

I'll experiment with the other Woolco photos I've already posted here on Flickr, just to see how they will turn out.

I wanted to make a post like this for some time now but I always lacked the time. However NOW is the time! There have been so many comments and people supporting me lately. Not just when it comes to photography but also in my relationship with Raven you were cheering on me and supporting me through difficult and happy times. I want to thank you with all of my heart, especially those who follow me since the very beginning, when I started photography and had no idea about windlights, alpha maps or depth maps - also thank you to those who recently found my flickr and support me now. It means a whole lot to me and I am amazed by your loyalty and sincerity. Thank you for cheering on me all the way. You are amazing! Your words keep me going and put the biggest smile on my face. Honestly, Raven even makes fun of me when I answer my comments on facebook and flickr because I keep on smiling and chuckling in excitement the entire time. I never thought that I'd come that far with my photography and I'm thankful for everyone who held my hand throughout all this time and watched me grow. Thank you to all my Mentors (who might not even know that they are my mentors haha) and guided me throughout all these years ~ your amazing tips or even just watching your work from a distance helped me more than I can say. Last but not least: Thank you to my friends and family. I am blessed to have you in my life. My favorite people - you mean everything to me! ♡

Ah, sorry this was a long post. If you are still reading then please stop - just kidding! I'm grateful for your support and truly appreciate it! From the bottom of my heart: Thank you! ♡

Today, I’m implementing a new policy that should please some of my Flickr friends.

I have been wearing some of you down with my voluminous series. Today, that stops.

Oh, I’m not going to quit telling stories, just not on Flickr. Here, I’ll post one photo of a bird, animal, place, or subject at a time, along with a link to my blog, where I’ll put the story and additional related photos. The links will take you out of Flickr for a moment, but you can easily return from my blog by clicking the return link there.

birdsandmusings.wordpress.com/2017/04/10/welcome-to-birds...

Perhaps no one will elect to go to the blog. At least, however, folks will have a better opportunity to do what I think most Flickr users want to do: quickly pop in to see what a Flickr friend is seeing, then quickly move on to the next....

If you have any feedback on this notion, I’d love to hear it....

Cheers! Have a great day! 😊

I thought I would put a photo up, just to let you all know I am ok. Here is part of a dyed daisy from the grocery.

I did want to ask you all something. A couple of nights ago, Flickr was down for a while. When it came back up, there appeared, in all available comment boxes ... (where I type my comment to your photo).... a link. The link sits in the bottom of the next available comment box on all pages except within the groups.

It consists of a Smiley face and the word "ALPHA".

When I mentioned it to one friend, he said he doesn't know what I am talking about. So my question is.... does anyone else have this?

I have not, nor will I, click on the link, unless it turns out to be something Flickr did.

I hope you are all ok. I have been following many of you, daily, by your photos, so I know some of you are ok. All is well here, we have been isolated for three weeks today, with only three trips to the grocery, the latest one masked and gloved. My best hopes for you all.

Should you or shouldn't you? I was surprised to spot a piece in The Daily Mail this morning had the caption heading "Towering beauty: Autumn puts on a striking display of colour as the sun rises over the River Thames but winter gales and frost are on the way. With a stunning orange sky reflecting off some of London’s most historic landmarks, it was quite a sunrise. The colourful scene just before 7am yesterday remained for just a few minutes following a brief spell of rain"

Well I had walked through the rain and described earlier how there was this glorious sky just for a few minutes. I could have under exposed my shot or increased the saturation to get a deep orange glow, but I stuck faithful to what I saw, and my shot is straight out of the camera. But the picture in the paper is very different

We had a early Moderate Risk just about 100 miles to my south of Kearney Nebraska. Meaning... My back yard. It was the first set of storm cells in South Central Nebraska & North Central Kansas.

Just to the northeast of Beaver City Nebraska I encountered a nice photogenic storm cell that had just went to a severe warned status. I paused a few mins to get my bearings a caught a few snaps!

A Kewl HD Video to Boot! Some good footage of rotation on the furthermost point south of the storm. On the South side of Phillipsburg Kansas. Its to big to put on Flickr ...Link on over to my YouTube Channel to view the Video youtu.be/3K8Av9Q00L0

Five big Armour Yellow units lean into the curve as they battle the 2.2% grade marching up Cajon Pass at about MP 471 on modern day Union Pacific's Mojave Sub. They still have more than 600 ft to climb before reaching the 3849 ft summit at Hiland nine miles ahead. This northbound manifest is meeting a southbound counterpart tucked in the 9515 ft long Canyon Siding.

This route is the famed Palmdale Cutoff that was built by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1967. In SP days this train would actually be considered a westbound as it was headed toward the SP's headquarters city of San Francisco.

The Mojave Sub was one of the west's last great railroad construction projects surpassed only by the construction of the line into the Powder River Basin in the 70s and 80s. To learn more about the Palmdale cutoff check out this great link:

cs.trains.com/ctr/b/mileposts/archive/2017/10/30/fifty-ye...

Of course the Espee was a latecomer to the pass with the first rails being laid in 1885 by a Santa Fe predecessor. That line still exists operated by BNSF as Main 3 of their Cajon Sub and is behind where I'm standing taking this while. Meanwhile out of sight in the foreground are BNSF's Cajon Sub Mains 1 and 2 which date from the Santa Fe's 1913 low grade line via Sullivan's Curve (with the 2nd track added in 2008). There is a lot to see and a lot to learn when you're here at this busiest of all mountain railroad passes!

Cajon Pass

San Bernardino County, California

Monday May 14, 2012

As the winter solstice nears, the sun takes on a dazzling quality here in northern latitudes. Now in mid-December, we're limited to just a little over nine hours of daylight. But even that is nothing like summer sun which rides high in the sky. The December sun has that uncomfortable effect on the eyes, the kind you get while driving into a sunrise (or set) in the summer, but now it persists all day long. Contrast is very high and shadows seem absurdly long, even at midday. The shadows created by these gravestones seemed to reach back toward me, as if trying to envelop me in their grip, in their darkness. The starkness of the alternating dark and light stripes put me in mind of a piano keyboard. And no sooner had that thought been implanted, I began a mental playback of Chopin's funeral march. Things like this happen to me all the time. Some strange thought pops into my head, and this in turn triggers a memory of some other random thought, and sometimes a chain reaction begins. Often bringing forth distant, long-forgotten memories. Once unleashed, those memories can linger for minutes or even days, or sometimes they never completely leave me. Not necessarily a bad thing, just a weird thing. Long after I had left this cemetery, and even now while looking at this photo, I hear the sad strains of the Chopin composition. It could be the perfect soundtrack for much of my imagery, but I'll forever associate it with this particular image.

I photographed this beautiful barn owl back on January 4th of this year at Hawk Watch with is put on every Saturday at 10 a.m. in January and February at the Wildlife Research Institute in Ramona, California. This was the first one of the year. Although it's called Hawk Watch they also display and educate the public on owls. My wife and I have loved barn owls ever since we had an owl box installed on our property back in 2011 for purposes of rodent control.

I have an album of Barn Owl pictures with over 45 images in it, and I'm hoping to add more images this spring if all goes well. Here's the link to that album if you like that sort of thing.

For the Macro Monday theme "main meal" (November 25th 2019)

I nearly didn't post this week - shooting food is really hard with a 3" size limit! I often make Japanese meals, so I tried shooting my main meal of Udon noodles with a side dish of prawns. But Udon noodles up close in macro look disconcertingly like intestines! Enough to put me off my meal ;o)

So next I made home-made sushi - extra small rolls so I could fit more into my 3" (see them set against my size guide in the first comment field).

Then someone pointed out to me that not only was there to be no dishes, cutlery etc. But there could be NO space round the food. Wall-to-wall sushi? I ended up lying on the floor with a torch to get an angle that filled the frame!! I'm not sure the final shot is worth posting ... but here it is!!

There's a link to my shot of my "Wall of sushi" specially for Hans in the first comment field too.

HMM to everyone, and have a great week ;o)

A "little" scene built for the current "Your build in the world-famous LEGO House!" contest on LEGO IDEAS.

Diogenes Trexler was about to enjoy a pizza - the best in the galaxy, according to him - on Korvon, when a giant worm, attracted by the smell, appeared. Diogenes quickly opened a portal to flee, but didn't really think of where to go, so it's in the poor Morgan Birch's bathroom that his portal led.

To get a better look at the model, you can see it in 3D on Mecabricks.

My entry's page can be seen here.

My favorite 'style' of Mustang is the original body style starting in 1964½ thru 1968...however, in 1969 when the body got a little larger along with a few other small changes, there was the introduction of the Mach 1. These continued into 1970 when the Boss was also introduced. As a result, along with the original these are among my favorite Mustangs ever produced. (Side note...the others on the top of my list would be the Shelby's!) And...when they put out these great cars, they also came up with some great colors like this Grabber Orange on this '70 Mach 1 428 Cobra Jet!

Three bracketed photos were taken with a handheld Nikon D7200 and combined with Photomatix Pro to create this HDR image. Additional adjustments were made in Photoshop CS6.

Nothing 'arty', a shot for the gardeners - ‘Hosta 6 pack’. Taken at 08:30 this morning before the sun puts them in the shade. I’m sure you can watch these grow - 12 days since I took the last Hosta shot - see inset pic in comment box. The usual reminder of importance to STAY AT HOME to stay VIRUS FREE and to NOT be a vehicle to pass it on to others, though I understand guidance have back peddled very slightly on the travel to somewhere to exercise. Stay safe, Alan:-)

366 - I’ve decided to do this to force me to pick up a camera other than when we are away on our travels (they will be posted as normal) - I will be interested to see what transpires, they will be varied I’m sure so we’ll see where inspiration takes me over the course of the year, hopefully at the end of it I will be a better photographer. Feel free to critique as you see fit, but please don’t feel obliged, I anticipate they will not be to all tastes. Have a great year and if you also have embarked on a 365 project then good luck in seeing it through, Alan:-)
